A truck driver in Santaquin won a Lamborghini Murcielago supercar, the top prize of a "Joe Schomo to Lambo" contest organised by Maverik and teamgive.org. The stunning lime green Lambo was presented to him at an afternoon event. Unfortunately, the lucky winner David Dopp lost control of the car a few hours later, sending the Lamborghini into a field. The contest was organised in a bid to raise money to find a cure for rare neurological diseases and David Dopp was picked as the winner amongst 10 qualifiers in September 2011. It was held by the 220-store Maverik gas station chain together with teamgive and started in March 2009. The winner was announced during a halftime show event at a football game at Brigham Young University. Each qualifier was asked to pull numbers to find out who won the Lambo supercar. Dopp, the father of 6 children, decided to pick the number 6. Dopp couldn't believe his luck when he saw the supercar standing in his driveway on a sunny Saturday afternoon: “If you think something can happen to you it can,” the winner said.
“That’s a lot of power for one man to have,” said Dopp of his first ride in the bright green roadster. “It’s so crazy, I feel like I’m in a dream.” Maverik's Executive Director of Marketing Ernie Harker said that Dopp also won a $5,000 package from Miller Motor Sports for a high-performance driving school. He added: "He'll even get to learn how to drive that thing." Unfortunately, Dopp was to find out sooner than expected how powerful a Lamborghini can be. Driving with a friend several hours after taking possession of the car, the Lambo spun out of control and went over a curb before coming to rest in a field 75 feet off of the road embankment. “We came around that corner and just started spinning,” said Dopp. He added that he might have hit did a patch of black ice or gravel. According to local officer Allen Hansen, the vehicle was moving at “speeds too fast for conditions" despite Dopp's insistence he was driving at 40-50mph. He added that the truck driver was "not used to the supercar." Earlier in the day, Dopp posted a comment on Facebook for driving too fast in his new car. “Just had Santaquin Police called on me for driving too fast. SORRY !!!! :) ,” it reads. The Lamborghini is reported to be on its way to Las Vegas to a specialist car shop to determine how much it will cost to repair the vehicle. Thankfully for Dopp, it had full insurance coverage. Wow that's a stroke of bad luck! Seems like he was too lucky and somehow he pushed his luck... Oh dear I hope the car isn't wrecked sounds like it could still be ok. I've driven one of these before and I know how easy it can be to crash one! If I won a Lamborghini I'd probably want the driving lessons before setting foot in it!!
