Indian health officials are offering one lucky man or woman the chance to win a free Tata Nano. In exchange, the winner must agree to be sterilised in a bid to slow down the nation's birth rate. Applicants will also be given the chance to win other prizes including motorcycles, televisions and food blenders in this unusual promotion.

The first person to volunteer to be sterilised in Jhunjhunu, west of Delhi, will be given a new Nano, the world's cheapest car.

Doctor Sitaram Sharma is hoping that giving away incentives to participants will help the center reach an initial target of 20,000 sterilised men and woman.

People volunteering for the operation will also be paid a cash incentive of Rs1,000 ($23), while anyone who refers a friend will earn Rs200 ($4.50).

Although unusual, this isn't the first time that health officials have used incentives to help slow down India's fast population growth. In 2009, some 150 men were awarded gun licences in return for undergoing vasectomies in the Shivpuri region.

Crazy

I understand they need to encourage the public to take part but taking part in a raffle in exchange for getting sterilised seems a bit crazy to me... I just hope people take part for the right reason not just to pick up 20 odd dollars!
