Lamborghini Sesto Elemento: world's most expensive car?

Italian supercar maker Lamborghini looks set to put the stunning Sesto Elemento concept car into production, according to recent reports. With a price tag rumoured at an eye-watering €2 million (£1.77 million), the new supercar would officially be the most expensive modern car in the world.

Lamborghini Sesto ElementoEver since its launch in 2005, the 1,000 horsepower Bugatti Veyron has kept the title of 'world's most expensive car', in addition to being the fastest production car in the world. It starts at €1.2 million (£1.1 million or $1.7 million), however the 1,200 horsepower Super Sport model is a snip at €1.9 million (£1.67 million).

Although Lamborghini's new supercar would be around £100k more expensive, initial reports suggest that only 20 Sesto Elementos are due to be produced. This compares to some 291 Veyrons sold in the 5 years to 2010 according to Bugatti's owner Volkswagen.

Lamborghini's new supercar, which is apparently "already well into development" according to company sources quoted in the article on Yahoo Cars, is expected to hit 62mph in less than 2.5 seconds - even faster than the Veyron. Its engine will be based on the Gallardo's 5.2 litre V10 engine and its carbon fiber body and chassis will make it one of the lightest supercars ever made.

However, while the Veyron is generally considered relatively heavy, its top speed of 267.85mph will still eclipse Sesto Elemento's expected 200mph. In addition, Lamborghini's latest model is not expected to be road legal anywhere in the world.

Despite its price tag and track focus, the Sesto Elemento is expected to be in strong demand. Its Reventon model, which cost €1 million despite being a "re-skinned Murcielago at 3x the price" was popular with 35 sold.

What do you think? Is the fact that the Sesto Elemento won't be road legal an issue for Lamborghini, or do you expect it to be just as popular as the Reventon, if not more? Do you agree with the direction Lamborghini is taking with this new supercar, or would you rather see it focus on producing more affordable models? Your comments are welcome!
